Each year Picasso’s works seem to take major roles in legal cases involving the art world. Last year, an electrician was sentenced for stealing hundreds of works by the late modern master. 2016 started with the filing of a lawsuit between the representatives of the Qatari royal family and mega art entity Gagosian Gallery, Inc. In the most recent legal wrangling involving a work valued at over $100 million, the owner of the work (one of Picasso’s daughters) purportedly sold the same bust to two different parties. The coveted work is currently displayed as part of the Picasso sculpture exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Bust of a Woman (Marie-Thérèse) was created for Picasso’s former lover Marie-Thérèse, the mother of the current owner who has allegedly sold the same work to both the litigating parties.
Partner Leila Amineddoleh had the opportunity to discuss the matter with Artsy journalist Isaac Kaplan. Read more about the lawsuit here.
